Professional Bakers Summer Short Course 2017

 

The Worshipful Company of Bakers announces a Summer Short Course: July 4-6th 2017 at The Bertinet Kitchen Cookery School, Bath

The Bertinet Kitchen is owned and run by Richard Bertinet, a professional chef and baker who opened the school in September 2005 in the centre of beautiful and historic Bath. The school won the South West Tourism Award for Best Tourism Experience in 2009 and has been featured in the US television series on PBS: Gourmet's Adventures with Ruth - A Tour of Cookery Schools around the World.  

Originally from Brittany in north-west France, Richard trained as a baker from the age of 14 and his career has also encompassed catering activities, including work at several prestigious establishments. He has held the position of head chef at both the Rhinefield House Hotel in the New Forest and the Silver Plough at Pitton in Salisbury where in 1990 he was awarded the Egon Ronay, Pub of the Year and American Express Magazine, UK Pub of the Year.  

In 2004, Richard moved to Bath with his wife Jo, and their young family; and the plans for The Bertinet Kitchen began to take shape. The premises at 12 St Andrew's Terrace, Bath were secured and the school opened in September 2005. Richard has also published several books: Dough in 2005; Crust in 2007; Cook - In A Class of Your Own in 2010; Pastry in 2012 and Patisserie Maison in 2014.

Richard was named the BBC Food Champion of the Year 2010 at the BBC Food & Farming Awards on 24 November 2010 and he makes regular TV appearances on programmes such as Saturday Kitchen (BBC).

The Worshipful Company of Bakers is delighted to announce that a Professional Bakers Summer Short Course will take place at the Bertinet Kitchen in July, and invite Bakery Students and Trainees to apply for bursary assisted places.

The group will meet at the Travelodge Hotel in the centre of Bath in the evening of Monday July 3rd ready for a prompt start on the 4th. The course content will include artisan bread production, sourdough techniques and different types of pastry. Learning will be the order of the day, but there will also be opportunities to see some of the local sights too.

The bursary covers the costs of the Tuition, school fees, accommodation and meals; and a set of bakery whites. Students are responsible for travelling expenses to and from Bath, and any personal spending money. Students are also requested to bring their own safety shoes.

This course is offered to bakery students and trainees in the industry who are over the age of 18 from the UK and Ireland only; and the number of places is limited. The selection of candidates will be at the discretion of the Worshipful Company of Bakers and their decision is final.
