Over 120 City of London Liverymen and their guests, representing 43 Livery Companies, were part of an audience of over 1,000 at the Christmas Concert and Carols in Chester Cathedral on Saturday 10th December.
The occasion, which was the annual Winter Gathering of City of London Liverymen in the North, commenced with a Reception for Liverymen and their guests in the Chapter House in the late afternoon, followed by a Livery Dinner in the Refectory and then the Christmas Concert and Carols in the Nave led by the superb Chester Cathedral Choir.
Among those present and shown right was Liverymen Arthur Carter (centre), well known to those who attended the City of London School where Arthur taught until retiring to Cheshire. Also present were Liveryman Graham Mason, by coincidence a former City of London pupil now living in North Yorkshire, and his wife Jacqueline (on either side of Arthur), and on the outsides are Past Master David Bentley and his wife Jenny, a Liveryman of the Framework Knitters, who live near Wetherby.
Many Liverymen stayed overnight at The Queen Hotel where the Brigantians had set up camp and enjoyed the delights of the historic walled City of Chester the following day.
Origins of Brigantes
Over 1,200 Liverymen of the City of London are resident in the North of England, with 41 Companies having 10 or more Liverymen in this area, to which should be added the many Liverymen throughout the UK and worldwide who regard the North of England as their spiritual home by adoption or birth-right.
In 2014, to enable Liverymen of all Companies to meet together in the North, especially those less able to travel regularly to London, the Brigantes Breakfast was born. The name derived from the Brigantes tribe which occupied a similar geographical area in pre-Roman times.
The organising committee comprises Adrian Waddingham CBE (2013/14 Sheriff, Past Master Actuary), Charles Cowling (Past Master Actuary), Nick Gale (Past Master Plumber) and David Bentley (Past Master Baker). All City of London Liverymen are most welcome at Brigantes occasions.
