New Master In Fine Voice Up North

Master and Mistress Baker with Liveryman Richard Barwick (left) and 2013/14 Sheriff Adrian Waddingham CBEStill in their first week as Master and Mistress Baker, Colin and Diana Reese plus a car full of dogs were straight off to the north for a long weekend at the 2015 Brigantes Winter Gathering of City of London Liverymen in Ripon, North Yorkshire.

There the Master and Mistress Baker were among 100 Masters, Past Masters, Liverymen and guests from across the Livery Companies for Saturday 5th December’s lively Reception and Supper at the Ripon Spa Hotel. The Brigantes party then joined another 200 guests for a splendid evening of Christmas Choral Music, Carols and Readings in Ripon’s magnificent Cathedral – ideal practice for the Bakers Company’s own Carol Service at All Hallows by the Tower on Tuesday 8th.

Also on parade for the Bakers were :
- Liveryman Richard and Angela Barwick (formerly Petts Wood, now Halifax)
- Liveryman Graham and Jacqueline Mason (formerly Gillingham, now Malton)
- Liveryman Arthur Carter (formerly on the teaching staff at City of London School – taught some current Bakers Liverymen - and now living in Chester)
- Liveryman Maureen Bonnano-Smith, who is Master of Tower Ward Club too this year (St Albans)
- Liveryman Eric Nash (Bexley)
- Our 2013/14 Master and Mistress Baker, David and Jenny Bentley (Wetherby)

Over 1,200 City of London Liverymen are resident in the North of England, with 41 Companies having 10 or more Liverymen in this area, to which should be added the many Liverymen throughout the UK and worldwide who regard the North of England as their spiritual home by adoption or birthright.

To enable Liverymen of all Companies to meet together in the North, especially those less able to travel regularly to London, the Brigantes Breakfast was born - the name deriving from the Brigantes tribe which occupied a similar geographical area in pre-Roman times.  All City of London Liverymen are welcome at Brigantes occasions.

The next Brigantes Breakfast on Friday 20th May 2016 – 12.15 for 13.00 - which will be held at the spectacular Cutlers Hall in Sheffield and is expected to attract over 300 Liverymen and guests.
