Bakers Out In Force at Brigantes Breakfast in Sheffield

310 Liverymen and their guests, including the Master and Mistress Baker and 17 other current Livery Masters, attended the Brigantes Breakfast in the magnificent Cutlers Hall in Sheffield on Friday 20 May.

The occasion was the annual luncheon of City of London Liverymen in the North. 76 Livery Companies were represented.

Other Bakers attending, with their guests, were Jean Grieves, Maureen Bonnano-Smith, Eric Nash, Peter Morgan, Jo Street and soon-to-be-clothed Caroline Kenyon.

On duty at Cutlers Hall were Past Master Alan Willis, in his capacity as Officer Commanding, Light Cavalry, Honourable Artillery Company (see more below), and Past Master David Bentley, one of the four Brigantes organisers along with Adrian Waddingham CBE, Sheriff in 2013/14 and Past Master Actuary, Charles Cowling, Past Master Actuary and Nick Gale, Past Master Plumber.   

Adrian Waddingham presided. The speakers were Ald Dame Fiona Woolf DBE DL, Lord Mayor in 2013/14 and Master Solicitor, Mr James Newman, Ironmonger and Past Master Cutler in Hallamshire, and His Honour Judge Paul Worsley QC, Cooper, who sits at The Old Bailey.

Other Principal Guests included the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, the Lord Bishop of Sheffield who was Chaplain for the Day, the Master of the Merchant Taylors Company of York and the Clerk to the Chamberlains Court at Guildhall.

The Light Cavalry, HAC, Officer Commanding Alan Willis, was in attendance and provided a splendid Carpet Guard complete with swords and busbies. Musical accompaniment was from the British Imperial Military Band, who performed a stirring ‘Yorkshire Brass’ marching concert over coffee, complete with the Post Horn Gallop to close.

The next Brigantes function is the Winter Gathering at Chester on Saturday 10th December, for dinner and to attend the Christmas Concert in the Cathedral. The 2017 Brigantes Breakfast will be ‘West of the Pennines’, with details to follow.
