Portsmouth Flotilla Awards and Awards Dinner - Friday 13th July 2018

As Master I was invited on behalf of the Commanding Officer of HMS Puncher, the Royal Navy ship with which the Worshipful Company of Bakers is affiliated to be present at the Awards ceremony organised for units of the Flotilla and the dinner that took place after it. Each unit in the Flotilla had been asked to nominate their Sailor of the Year.
So, on a hot July Friday afternoon I went down to Portsmouth and there met a number of other Masters and Prime Wardens whose Companies are affiliated with other ships of the Royal Navy. We were taken to HMS Victory where we stood on deck while citations were read out for some 24 sailors from different ships who won their respective Sailor of the Year Awards. In their various ways they had carried out work well above and beyond the call of duty. It was a moving ceremony on such a historic ship.
The ceremony was followed by a dinner primarily to reward and celebrate the award winners but also to thank the various Livery Companies for their support. It was impressive to see how positive the young sailors are and good to know that our support is given to such an enthusiastic group of people in this age when what we tend to hear is news of cutbacks.
